accident investigators begin probe to crash
A team of investigators from the Accident Investigators Bureau on Friday morning arrived at the crash site of the Cessna 208 aircraft conveying the Taraba State Governor and five others before it crashed on Thursday night.
The team, it was gathered, had conducted some tests on the wreckage of the aircraft. The tests will partly assist to unravel the cause of the crash.
It was gathered that the investigators subsequently left for Jalingo, the operational base of the aircraft to speak with maintenance engineers, who had been working on the aircraft.
The spokesman for the bureau, Mr. Tunji Oketunbi, confirmed the visit. He said the agency had commenced investigations into the cause of the crash.
Oketunbi said, “Our team has visited the site. We have conducted some tests on the wreckage of the aircraft. They will also discuss with the aircraft maintenance personnel in Jalingo. Since the crew survived, we will also talk to them later when they are stable enough to do that. Their life is the most important thing for now.”
Saturday PUNCH learnt that the AIB officials will later get files about the aircraft and the crew from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the industry regulator to further assist in their duty.
They are expected to speak with officials of the NCAA and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency’s air traffic controllers, who were on duty when the crash occurred.
